LAURIE, A NATIONAL RECIPIENT OF THE ACADEMY OF AMERICAN POETS PRIZE AND THE 2012 ANDRÉS MONTOYA POETRY PRIZE, IS NOT ONLY AN AWARD-WINNING CHICANA POET BUT ALSO BECAME THE FIRST WRITER-IN-RESIDENCE AT TEXAS A&M UNIVERSITY SAN ANTONIO

UPDATE: THE TEXAS STATE ARTS WERE JUST ANNOUNCED AND EMMY PEREZ, REPRESENTING McALLEN (AND THE BORDERLAND) HAS JUST BEEN SELECTED AT STATE POET LAUREATE FOR 2020!

Originally from Cali but relocated to El Paso where she has family and roots, Emmy then taught at the University of Texas El Paso and is now a resident of The Valley, where she is a professor as well. Author and activist she has been an active member of the resistance across the borderland. FELICIDADES EMMY!
